About Us

The mission and history of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates, PA extend beyond the formation of this skilled group of physicians thirty years ago. In 1960, Dr. Theodore Batchelder, one of its founding surgeons, performed the first open heart surgery in North Florida using his own instruments, portable equipment, and a single trained technician. Now deceased, Dr. Batchelder's legacy of dedication, skill, and commitment is kept alive by ten highly trained and innovative surgeons. Our group continues the tradition of providing the most advanced techniques for repairing and replacing heart valves, bypassing blocked coronary arteries, and treating other complex problems of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and esophagus. Keeping up with the latest in all technologies is critical to our associates.

Cardiothoracic & Vascular Associates, PA performs the largest volume of cardiac, vascular, and general thoracic operations of any practice in the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia area. The group performs open heart surgery at four medical centers: St. Vincent's Medical Center, Columbia Memorial, Baptist Medical Center, and St. Luke's Hospital. Over 2,200 procedures were performed during 2000. More than 3,000 thoracic and vascular operations were performed at the four medical centers and Methodist Hospital, Columbia Orange Park Medical Center, and Baptist Beaches Hospital at the Beaches. The extensive coverage that we are able to provide our patients and their primary physicians makes our practice unique in the area. In fact, almost half of our patients are referred to us by physicians outside the Jacksonville area. They come to us from Waycross, Brunswick, Valdosta, St. Augustine, and other areas.

Our established team of physicians, physicians assistants, nurses, and administrative staff, enhances the quality of care we are able to provide. We strongly believe that we approach our work with the highest level of compassion and quality. Our experience allows us to perform intricate procedures while making it as comfortable as possible for the patient and the family. In keeping its commitment to quality, care, and concern for the patient, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates maintains two physicians and two physicians assistants on call 24hours per day.

We treat our patients as if they were our own families. We have a "can do" philosophy in that if the surgical solution to our patients' problem exists we can do it!

The experience you need. The quality you demand. When you need additional care for your heart, lungs, or blood vessels, ask your doctor to introduce you to the physicians at Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates, PA.
